Rooster Sanctuary at Danzig’s Roost

The Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to provide safe and forever homes for misplaced, abandoned, and abused farm animals, with a focus on roosters. Founded in 2010 as the first rooster rescue operation of its kind in the nation, the sanctuary is located on a 40-acre property in Bennett, Colorado. Since its inception, the Sanctuary has saved the lives of over 4,000 animals. The Sanctuary currently houses 249 animals, including 92 roosters, who are provided safety, nurturing, enrichment, and medical care for life.
One of our primary concerns since 2014 has been the large-scale rescue of roosters abused as part of the barbaric tradition of cockfighting. Cockfighting is an age-old practice where roosters are bred and trained to fight each other to the death for gambling and entertainment. Authorities usually euthanize the “rescued” roosters due to common misconceptions regarding fighting roosters and the view that they cannot be rehabilitated and are “dangerous.” Through the Sanctuary’s 15 years of experience, it has come to realize that the roosters are traumatized and fearful due to abuse. Our sanctuary has the history, expertise, and resources to rescue, rehabilitate, and provide lifelong care for these roosters. It also works diligently to raise awareness about the plight of these birds through online posts, tabling events, and on-air news stories. We believe all beings are worthy of safety, respect, and care.
